Carney tells Calgary unity rally Alberta vote comes at "worst possible time"

PM Mark Carney warned at Thursday's Forever Canadian rally at Calgary's BMO Centre that Alberta's separation vote could not come at a worse time, as more than 450,000 Albertans have already cast early ballots ahead of Monday's vote.
Why it matters
Alberta votes Monday, October 19, on whether to remain in Canada or begin the legal process toward a future binding referendum on separation. With more than 450,000 Albertans already voting early or by mail, Carney's in-person push in Calgary is the federal government's clearest intervention in the campaign's final days.
The rally
Speaking to more than 7,000 supporters at the Forever Canadian rally at the BMO Centre on Thursday night, Carney said "there couldn't be a worse time" for the referendum. "It's a dangerous and divided world," he said, urging Canadians to come together: "We are stronger together and Canada is worth fighting for."
What's on the ballot
The vote has 10 questions, one asking whether Alberta should stay in Canada or instruct the government to start the process toward a future independence referendum. Premier Danielle Smith called the vote after a grassroots petition drive. Separation supporters argue Ottawa has overlooked the oil-rich province and that environmental policies have held back the oil and gas sector; opponents warn independence would bring billions in debt and economic uncertainty. Carney acknowledged Albertans' frustrations are real and repeated his pledge to fast-track a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific coast.
What's next
Carney attends another Forever Canadian rally in Edmonton on Friday. Smith is set to speak at a separate pro-unity event in Calgary alongside Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Polls show most Albertans favour staying in Canada, but Carney told volunteers not to trust the polls — turnout will decide it.
