Two Trains Collide in Egypt's Giza Province, Killing 7 and Injuring More Than 112

· N GLOBE

Egypt's Health Ministry has raised the toll from Sunday's train collision in Giza province to seven killed and more than 112 injured, with 45 of the injured discharged; President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered an investigation into the cause.

At least four people were killed and 88 injured on Sunday, November 8, when two trains collided in Giza province, Egypt. The Health Ministry said the accident happened near the village of Gerza in the Al-Ayyat district, along the Cairo–Aswan agricultural road, when train No. 134, travelling from Giza to Fayoum, struck the rear of Cairo–Aswan train No. 2010 between Kafr Ammar and Al-Riqqa stations, causing several carriages to derail and overturn. The crash site is about 76 kilometres south of Cairo. (Archive image: the scene of an earlier train derailment in Egypt.)

Injury figures not fully consistent

Reuters, the South China Morning Post and The Hindu all cited the ministry's initial count of four killed and 88 injured; Egyptian state-owned media had earlier given a figure of 120 wounded, a discrepancy the authorities have not yet explained. Egyptian National Railways confirmed the train numbers and the sequence of the collision in a statement, but has not stated the cause, said whether the ministry's initial toll is final, or described the severity of the injuries.

Egypt's rail safety under scrutiny again

Egypt has a long record of deadly rail accidents, and its railway safety is under recurring scrutiny. In January 2026, a high-speed train crash in southern Spain killed 46 people, and on October 28, 2026, another high-speed rear-end collision in Toledo province, Spain, killed 69. An investigation into the Giza collision is under way, and the railway authorities have yet to announce a cause.

Update, November 8: Death toll rises to 7; more than 112 injured; president orders investigation

Egypt's Health Ministry has raised the toll from the train collision in Giza province's Al-Ayyat district to seven killed and more than 112 injured (Ahram Online, citing the ministry, put the injured at 112; Sky News reported 114); 45 of the injured have been discharged after treatment. The ministry's initial count was four killed and 88 injured, while state-owned media had earlier reported 120 wounded. NBC News and the Associated Press reported that one of the dead is a train driver, and 72 ambulances took part in the rescue. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said he was following the accident with great concern and ordered an urgent investigation to hold anyone found negligent accountable; the cause has still not been announced.
