Two Los Angeles City Council races remain too close to call, with District 3 separated by 294 votes

Two open seats on the Los Angeles City Council remain too close to call. According to the latest figures released Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office, businessman Tim Gaspar leads former government employee Barri Worth Girvan by 294 votes in District 3 — 26,322 votes (50.28%) to 26,028 (49.72%). In District 9, Jose Ugarte leads Estuardo Mazariegos by about 1,900 votes — 13,929 (53.66%) to 12,031 (46.34%). (Photo: file photo of Los Angeles City Hall.)

Two seats replacing termed-out members

The two seats replace longtime members Bob Blumenfield in District 3 and Curren Price in District 9, who are termed out. District 9, which covers downtown and South Los Angeles, will elect a Latino council member for the first time since 1962, when Edward Roybal held the seat, no matter which candidate wins.

City attorney race effectively decided

In the city attorney’s race, Marissa Roy leads John McKinney by a wide margin — 488,064 votes (66.53%) to 245,511 (33.47%) — putting her in position to become the city’s second woman to hold the citywide office.

About 842,000 ballots still to be counted countywide

The county estimates that about 842,000 ballots from Tuesday’s election remain to be tallied countywide. The Registrar-Recorder will post updates daily through November 13, and the county certifies results by November 27. The mayor’s race is also undecided: the Associated Press has not called it, with Councilwoman Nithya Raman ahead of Mayor Karen Bass, 405,193 votes (51.67%) to 379,069 (48.33%).
