The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 to authorize a $20 million transfer covering a projected deficit in the fire department's sworn overtime account, driven by out-of-city wildfire deployments. Mayor Karen Bass's approval is still required.

Why it matters

The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 on Wednesday to authorize a $20 million transfer covering a projected deficit in the sworn overtime account of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The motion, introduced by Councilmember John Lee in September, addresses overspending driven by a severe wildfire season that stretched firefighter deployments far beyond the city.

Full report

The overspending was attributed to LAFD deployments to out-of-city wildfires, pre-positioning activity, emergency recalls and fire-prevention safety watches at special events. In July and August alone there were 17 LAFD deployments tied to the severe brush-fire season across the western states, according to Lee's motion. At the current spending rate, the sworn overtime account was expected to be depleted as early as the September 2 payroll date.

Some of the costs are expected to be reimbursed through the California Office of Emergency Services, Cal Fire and other responsible agencies. The transfer still requires support from Mayor Karen Bass. Councilmembers Traci Park and Imelda Padilla were absent during Wednesday's vote.
