Pope Leo XIV makes first public appearance since lung cancer surgery, leads Sunday Angelus

The Pope led the Angelus from the Apostolic Palace window on Sunday in his first public appearance since his hospital discharge on October 17, saying he will gradually resume his duties; his surgeon says the November South America trip need not be cancelled.

Why it matters

The 71-year-old Pope had the lower lobe of his right lung removed on October 13, with lung adenocarcinoma confirmed, and returned to public view just five days later — faster than expected.

What happened

On Sunday, October 18, Leo XIV led the Angelus from the window of the Apostolic Palace before the faithful in St. Peter's Square, his first public appearance since his discharge from Rome's Gemelli Hospital on October 17. "I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I have truly sensed your support," he said. He thanked the doctors, nurses and staff of the Gemelli Hospital in particular, and said the experience had made him "particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity."

What next

The Pope said he would "gradually resume" his activities. His surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, told Vatican News the recovery was progressing normally and there was no medical reason to cancel the planned November 6–17 trip to South America.
