São Paulo studies two cable-car lines linking Brasilândia and Jabaquara, costing up to R$2.95bn

· N GLOBE

Studies by SP Urbanismo and SPTrans propose two cable-car systems for the city's north and south zones — up to 15.2 km and 18 stations, integrated with the metro — but they remain in the study phase with no construction decided.

Up to R$2.95bn across two scenarios

Technical proposals by the city's SP Urbanismo and SPTrans outline two cable-car lines: one in Brasilândia (north) and one in Jabaquara (south). The full version totals 18 stations and 15.2 km at an estimated R$2.95 billion; a shorter alternative has 9 stations, 5.9 km and costs about R$1.166 billion.

Integrated with metro and buses

The Brasilândia line would start at CEU Paz and connect with the future Metro Line 6-Orange; the Jabaquara line would run from Terminal Jabaquara past the Brazilian Paralympic Centre and the São Paulo Zoo to Jardim São Savério, integrated with Metro Line 1-Blue. SP Urbanismo's model estimates a 32-minute end-to-end trip. The system uses detachable monocable gondolas seating up to 15 passengers at about 20 km/h.

Still studies, no construction timeline

Cable cars as public transport have been studied in São Paulo since 2012, inspired by Medellín, Colombia and La Paz/El Alto, Bolivia. The proposals remain at the study stage with no financing model or construction timeline decided.
