Pet budgie blown out of window in storm found hiding in a drain a mile away — and rescued

Luna, an 11-month-old pet budgie, escaped from her Northampton home when a window blew open during Storm Boelo and hid in a drain about a mile away; a passing motorist spotted her tail sticking out of a pipe and called the RSPCA.
A pet budgie who escaped from her home during a storm has been rescued after taking refuge in a drain about a mile (1.6 km) away. Luna, 11 months old, slipped out of her Northampton flat last month when a window blew open during Storm Boelo, and is now safely back home. (Photo: file image of a budgerigar.)
A tail sticking out of a pipe
A passing motorist spotted Luna's tail sticking out of a pipe in a drain and called the RSPCA. Inspector Richard Durant and trainee animal rescue officer Rosie Cowie found the budgie in her "hidey hole" on October 26 and freed her.
"Her little beak peeking out from a pipe"
"We peered down the drain and there was Luna's little beak peeking out from a pipe," Cowie said. "I gently grabbed her and popped her in a pet carrier; my first rescue, and one I certainly won't be forgetting." Owner Cimberley Frost said she knew Luna was gone when she noticed the kitchen window blown open and the flat suddenly go quiet during the storm.
Home again with Ziggy the dog
Luna is now back home in Northampton, reunited with her owner and Ziggy the dog. Frost shares Luna's adventures with Ziggy on social media.
