A seven-year-old boy and a man believed to be in his 30s have died after an explosion at a house in Violet Close, Newcastle, in the early hours of Wednesday. Six other people were taken to hospital; the cause is under investigation.

Two people have died after an explosion at a house in Newcastle, in north-east England, in the early hours of Wednesday (November 4). Northumbria Police said a seven-year-old boy died in the incident at Violet Close, and emergency crews later found a second body in the debris, believed to be that of a man in his 30s. Formal identification of both victims has yet to take place. (Photo: file photo of Newcastle.)

Six taken to hospital, one critically ill

Six other people — five adults and a child — were taken to hospital with varying degrees of injuries. All but one have since been discharged; the man who remains in hospital, in his 30s, is in a critical but stable condition. Police said there are no reports of missing people connected to the incident.

Cause still under investigation

Police said the investigation into the cause of the explosion is continuing, with cordons expected to remain in place for some time. The work is complex and time-consuming, not least because of the level of damage caused. Police are being supported by colleagues from a range of agencies, including Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

Supt Darren Adams, from Northumbria Police, said officers’ thoughts were with the family and friends of the two people who lost their lives, and specialist officers are supporting their loved ones. He urged everyone to respect their privacy, and asked people not to speculate about what happened, online or in the community, saying police are committed to providing answers.
