OpenAI to acquire Pierre Computer, folding Code Storage into Codex

Axios reported exclusively on November 4 that OpenAI will acquire developer-tools startup Pierre Computer and integrate its Code Storage product into Codex; terms were not disclosed, open-source projects will stay open source, and closing is subject to regulatory approval.
OpenAI will acquire developer-tools startup Pierre Computer and integrate its Code Storage product into its AI coding tool, Codex. Axios reported the deal exclusively on November 4, saying OpenAI confirmed it to the outlet; OpenAI later announced the planned acquisition on its own website. Financial terms were not disclosed, and closing is subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals; until then the two companies remain separate and independent.
Pierre's technology is already inside Codex
According to OpenAI's announcement, anyone who has browsed files or reviewed a change in the Codex app has already used Pierre's Trees and Diffs libraries. After closing, Code Storage customers will be able to keep using the service while its features are brought into Codex, and Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source.
Git storage built for machines
Code Storage, launched by Pierre in October 2025, is Git hosting infrastructure built for machines rather than people: it lets AI applications create repositories and push code on demand, without the rate limits and sign-in steps of a service designed for human developers. Pierre says AI-first builders including Lovable, Bolt, Amp and Poke use it to store generated code and related files.
A more direct challenge to GitHub, and Pando's separate role
The deal puts OpenAI in more direct competition with Microsoft-owned GitHub: Codex would not only help developers write code but also take over the layer where code is stored and managed. It is worth distinguishing Pando, the in-house Git backend OpenAI unveiled on November 2 for development in its own monorepo, which it says cut median push latency by nearly 80%. Pando is an internal system; Pierre's Code Storage is the product feature being integrated into Codex, and reporting does not describe the two as merging into a single public service.
