Vancouver fusion band Delhi 2 Dublin plays a special hometown concert at the Hollywood Theatre tonight (November 7), closing out its 20th anniversary year. The band calls its sound 'Subcontinental Pop' — a high-energy blend of Bhangra, electronic, hip-hop, reggae and Celtic influences.
It began with a one-night collaboration in 2006
The band began as a one-night collaboration at Vancouver's Celtic Fest in 2006. The explosive chemistry between the musicians sparked immediate momentum, launching Delhi 2 Dublin from underground bass parties and jam-band festival circuits to some of the biggest stages in the world — Electric Forest and Burning Man in the U.S., Glastonbury in the UK, the Bali Spirit Festival in Indonesia and the Woodford Folk Festival in Australia. Founding members Sanjay Seran and Ravi Binning continue to lead the band, violinist Serena Eades has been a driving force for over a decade, and new member Kal Mattu brings production, keyboards and tabla to the mix.
New music in the anniversary year, tour across Canada
In May the band released 'Smooth Operator', its first new music in more than six years, and in July it brought the story full circle with 'Dil Nachde XX', a 20th-anniversary reimagining of its very first single, 'Dil Nachde'. The anniversary tour has taken the band across Canada, and tonight it brings the celebration back to where it all began. The band's discography includes Planet Electric (2010), Turn Up The Stereo (2012), We're All Desi (2015) and We Got This (2019), and it has won multiple Western Canadian Music Awards, with recognition from CBC Music, BBC Asian Network and PBS.
