Canada's trade minister targets a year-end India pact as negotiators prepare October talks

Reuters reported on September 19 that International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, speaking during a visit to Mumbai, said he was optimistic Canada and India could conclude comprehensive economic partnership agreement negotiations in the coming months. Indian negotiators are expected in Canada in October, and the two countries' leaders may meet on the sidelines of the G20 gathering in December.

Energy is a major area of discussion. Sidhu said Canada is talking with Indian companies about access to, investment in and supply from Canadian LNG projects, while both countries are also examining expanded nuclear-energy cooperation. Reliance Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW Group were described as exploring Canadian critical-mineral investments, but no amounts or signed commitments were disclosed.

India's Financial Express reported the same day that a fourth CEPA negotiating round held in New Delhi from September 14 to 19 had concluded and that two chapters were completed. That supports evidence of progress but does not mean a final agreement has been drafted or approved.
