China says August disasters affected 12.62 million people; 595 dead or missing

The Office of the National Commission for Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief and the emergency ministry said typhoons, floods and geological disasters were the main hazards in August. They also reported 857,400 hectares of affected crops, nearly 1,500 collapsed rooms and about 12,000 damaged rooms.

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall twice in Zhejiang and brought prolonged rain across eastern, central and northern China. Officials counted 8.801 million people affected, six dead or missing and 28.26 billion yuan in direct typhoon losses, the largest share of the monthly total.

Floods and geological disasters left 587 people dead or missing. Officials said a mudslide on the Nepal side on August 26 left 562 dead or missing at the Gyirong border port in Tibet. That figure is still being checked, and missing people cannot all be treated as confirmed deaths.

Authorities said 361 rivers in 25 provincial-level regions exceeded warning levels and 27 reached their highest measured floods on record. The release is a monthly review and does not mean every affected area remains under the same emergency conditions now.
