CXMT says fifth-generation DRAM platform has entered mass production
China · TechnologyChinese memory-chip maker CXMT said on September 20 that its fifth-generation DRAM platform had entered mass production and unveiled two 24Gb LPDDR5X mobile-memory products. The company says the platform produces at least 50% more gross chip dies per wafer.
Why it matters
If production scale, yield and customer adoption match the company's expectations, the platform could strengthen China's position in the global DRAM supply chain and affect smartphone supply, chip pricing and US–China semiconductor competition. Performance and cost figures currently rely mainly on company disclosures.
Full report
Reuters reported on September 20 that CXMT announced at the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention in Hefei that its fifth-generation DRAM technology platform had entered mass production. DRAM is the short-term working memory used by phones, computers and other devices to run applications.
The company said it reduced the spacing of key memory-cell features to 11.95 nanometres and used quadruple patterning to create finer circuits. Vice-president Luo Xiaodong said the process capability was on par with the industry's most advanced mass-production nodes. This is a company claim; N Globe has not seen independent laboratory tests or complete yield data.
CXMT also unveiled two 24Gb LPDDR5X products for smartphones and portable devices. It said they store 50% more data than its previous comparable products and are in mass production. Using an 8Gb-chip baseline, the company says the platform produces at least 50% more gross dies per wafer than its fourth generation. Gross dies are not the same as the percentage of finished chips that pass testing.
CXMT said it developed the platform through computer simulation and joint work with Chinese chip-equipment makers. The advance comes while US export controls continue to restrict China's access to certain advanced chipmaking equipment and software, giving it supply-chain and strategic significance.
