Iran says it struck tanker Trend in Strait of Hormuz; specific attack not independently confirmed

Iranian state television, citing the Revolutionary Guard, said the Trend tried to pass without authorization and was struck. The Guard’s navy warned that vessels attempting unauthorized passage could face “destruction.” This is an official Iranian claim and has not been independently confirmed.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations office reported a vessel “security incident” about 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. It said the crew was safe and there was no environmental impact. AP said it was unclear whether this was the same event Iran described as involving the Trend.

UKMTO separately reported that another tanker was hit by an unknown projectile and briefly caught fire. The fire was extinguished, the crew was safe and no environmental damage was immediately reported. Iran did not claim that separate incident. Reuters shipping data showed that traffic through the strait remained far below normal.
