Death toll in Nigeria suspected methanol-drink poisoning rises to 49; about 170 affected

The incident was reported in the Odigbo and Irele local government areas of Ondo state in southern Nigeria. State Health Commissioner Banji Ajaka told local media that the toll had risen to 49, with about 170 people affected. An earlier Associated Press report cited 48 deaths and about 100 people receiving treatment.

Some patients have since been discharged. Ajaka warned that larger exposures can deteriorate rapidly and cause kidney failure, loss of vision and brain damage.

Ondo police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh said 15 people had been arrested in connection with the incident. One suspect was described as producing a drink suspected to contain methanol and is assisting investigators. That is a police allegation under investigation, not a court conviction.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified every affected batch, brand or point of sale. Residents should not rely on unverified social-media lists and should follow formal notices from state health authorities, medical facilities and police.
