Rights advocates issue open letter to Xi Jinping seeking releases and legal reforms

Freedom House published a September 16 letter with 29 signatories raising detention, legal and transnational-repression concerns.

Bakit mahalaga

The letter consolidates advocacy demands ahead of a US–China summit. Those demands are not confirmation that every underlying case is independently established or that anyone has been released.

The signatories include people affiliated with Freedom House, the Committee to Protect Journalists and Amnesty International USA.[1]

They seek releases of people they describe as prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders, legal changes, safe family reunification, and commitments against transnational repression surrounding Xi's US visit.[1]

This report documents the letter and its requests, also covered by VOA.[2] It does not independently establish every allegation or individual case mentioned, and the requests should not be confused with confirmed releases.
