Mass drone attack hits Moscow region and refinery; two reported dead

Reuters reported on September 20 that Moscow-region officials confirmed two deaths. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said several drones reached the Moscow oil refinery and one struck an apartment building; no casualties were reported inside Moscow city at the time.

Reuters journalists heard explosions in southeastern Moscow and saw smoke rising from the refinery area. The extent of damage and the refinery's operating status remain unknown, so the observed smoke does not by itself confirm a major shutdown.

Officials said about 400 people, including 70 children, were evacuated in the Ramenskoye district and several homes were damaged. The casualty, evacuation and damage figures come from Russian local authorities and may change as rescue and verification continue.

Sobyanin said Russian forces had downed more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, including about 450 heading toward the capital, and alleged the attack was meant to disrupt the election.
