Trump to meet Venezuela's interim president Rodríguez in New York

Waltz told reporters on a briefing call that Trump will host a UN General Assembly leaders' reception and hold a brief pull-aside with Rodríguez. He did not disclose the subjects they are expected to discuss.

Reuters and the Associated Press independently reported and confirmed the plan. Venezuela's communications ministry had not responded to requests for comment when the reports were published, so the confirmed information currently comes from the U.S. announcement.

Rodríguez served as Maduro's deputy. She became Venezuela's interim president after the United States removed Maduro in January, and the Trump administration has since repeatedly expressed support for working with her government.

The United States and Venezuela signed an energy agreement last month involving U.S. participation in developing and managing Venezuelan oil resources. The first in-person meeting could affect energy cooperation, Venezuela's political transition and U.S. policy toward the opposition, but neither side has announced an outcome.
