U.S. aviation sanctions take effect as UAE and other destinations halt Iranian airline services

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority said on September 24 that it had suspended all Iranian-airline flights to and from the country until further notice. Reuters reported that this was among the clearest operational effects of the strengthened U.S. measures. Some services linking Iran with Oman, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Baghdad were also cancelled or halted.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions on September 8 against 27 Iranian airlines and several third-country entities that it said supported Iranian aviation networks. It also suspended three aviation-related authorizations. Treasury warned that foreign firms or individuals enabling sanctioned Iranian airlines, including through aircraft transfers, cargo services or general-sales-agent support, could face U.S. consequences.

Reuters said Washington subsequently warned companies worldwide that continuing to transact with Iranian airlines after September 23 could put access to the U.S. financial system at risk. The UAE suspension shows some regional hubs have begun acting on that exposure. The restrictions are implemented by individual governments and airports; the United States is not directly closing foreign airspace.

Flight-tracking and media reports also showed that Iran's network had not stopped entirely. A service to China operated after the measures took effect, and some Turkey services remained scheduled.
