Carney to Join Pro-Canada 'Forever Canadian' Rallies in Calgary and Edmonton Ahead of Oct. 19 Referendum

Prime Minister Mark Carney has accepted an invitation from Forever Canadian to attend pro-Canada rallies at Calgary's BMO Centre on October 15 and Edmonton's EXPO Centre on October 16, campaigning for unity ahead of Alberta's October 19 referendum, which includes a question on whether the province should stay in Canada or begin a process toward a future separation vote.
Why it matters
Alberta votes on October 19 in a referendum whose ballot includes a question on beginning a process toward a future separation vote. The prime minister personally appearing at a pro-Canada rally in Calgary is Ottawa's most direct intervention in the final week before the vote, and the outcome will shape the future of Alberta's relationship with the federation.
The rallies
Forever Canadian is a pro-Canada campaign launched by former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk. The organization says Carney has accepted its invitation to attend two rallies — at Calgary's BMO Centre on October 15 and Edmonton's EXPO Centre on October 16 — and the Prime Minister's Office has confirmed he will attend both. Doors open at 5:30 PM for both events.
What's on the ballot
The October 19 Alberta referendum has 10 questions: one asks whether Alberta should stay in Canada or begin a process toward a future vote on separation; the other nine concern the Constitution and immigration. The result itself will not make Alberta independent, but it will be read as a barometer of public sentiment. Advance polls run October 13–17.
Carney's message
Carney led a virtual cabinet huddle on the morning of October 14 before departing for Alberta. In his Thanksgiving message, recorded at his former Edmonton high school, he called Canada "worth fighting for" and pointed to a proposed Alberta-to-West-Coast pipeline as the kind of major project best achieved by a united country. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is also expected to deliver a Canadian-unity speech in Calgary on October 16. The federal government says it is closely monitoring allegations of foreign interference in the referendum process.
