Why it matters
Xinhua announced on Oct. 14 that the new Yalu River bridge between China and North Korea will officially open to traffic on Oct. 15 (Thursday), with both countries holding a joint opening ceremony. The bridge will be the largest land trade port between the two countries and is seen as a sign of warming China–North Korea relations. Shortly before, North Korea opened its first road bridge with Russia.
Full report
According to Reuters, the Chinese section of the bridge was completed as early as 2014, but the North Korean side — amid cooling ties over nuclear-test sanctions — delayed building the approach bridge and customs facilities, leaving the bridge ending in mid-air for more than a decade. Its opening ends a wait of over ten years.
On trade, China's exports to North Korea reached $2.3 billion last year, a six-year high and up 25% year on year, though still below pre-2017 sanctions levels. The new bridge will substantially expand overland trade capacity between the two countries.
