London dockless bike 'crisis': Tower Hamlets petition pushes council toward mandatory parking zones

On October 7, campaigners Abul Khair, Guljar Khan and Yasmin Haque formally presented a petition at a Tower Hamlets Council meeting, demanding immediate council intervention over abandoned dockless bicycles.
The petition says indiscriminately parked bikes are obstructing narrow, congested pavements and creating significant hazards for pedestrians, with the problem worst in high-footfall areas such as Brick Lane, Spitalfields and Shoreditch.
Addressing councillors, Khair said: 'What may seem like a minor inconvenience can quickly become a serious obstruction for people trying to move around safely.' He added that for wheelchair users, parents with pushchairs, older residents and people with mobility needs, 'a badly parked bike can mean leaving the pavement and stepping on to the road.' The campaigners stressed the community supports sustainable transport but wants clear boundaries against anti-social parking.
Tower Hamlets Council is now considering mandatory designated parking zones across the borough. The petitioners also called for anti-social behaviour officers to monitor hotspots, remove obstructing bikes, and even ban dockless bikes from some areas altogether.
