Mayor Karen Bass urges Angelenos, especially near wildfire burn scars, to prepare as light rain moves through the weekend; the National Weather Service forecasts under an inch, but mud and debris flows remain a risk.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is urging residents, particularly those living near wildfire burn scar areas, to prepare for potential weather hazards as rain moves across the city through Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, light rain is forecast beginning Friday, October 30, with less than one inch of precipitation anticipated across Los Angeles, but residents in areas affected by recent wildfires are advised to remain vigilant for possible mudslides and debris flows.

What the city has done

The Mayor's office said crews have cleared more than 31,000 catch basins and drainage sites, and that following the January 2025 wildfires, an emergency executive order directed City Public Works crews to reinforce vulnerable hillsides, install protective barriers and clear debris from affected neighborhoods. City departments are continuing to inspect hillsides, burn areas and other vulnerable locations; the Los Angeles Fire Department has increased specialized resources for swift-water rescues, while the Department of Water and Power is preparing crews to respond to possible power outages.

How residents can prepare

Mayor Bass is encouraging residents to sign up for emergency alerts through NotifyLA and to attend the city's next emergency preparedness town hall on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 6 p.m. in San Pedro. The Mayor's office added that the city is preparing for a potentially historic El Niño season in Southern California.
