The Petit Palais fine arts museum closed all day on Saturday, October 24, as Paris braced for demonstrations; the Luxembourg Gardens, Jardin des Plantes, Gaîté Lyrique, Hôtel de la Marine and Forum des Images also shut, while City Hall urged vigilance from noon.

Why it matters

The Petit Palais, the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts in the 8th arrondissement opposite the Grand Palais, exceptionally closed its doors all day on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The museum announced the closure on its official account on Friday afternoon, citing the demonstration taking place in Paris that day, which prompted many cultural venues to close as a precaution.

Also closed for the day were the Luxembourg Gardens in the 6th arrondissement; the Jardin des Plantes, where the Ménagerie and the Grandes Serres were affected while some museums stayed open; the Gaîté Lyrique in the 3rd arrondissement, where ticket holders can get a refund or reschedule; the Hôtel de la Marine on Place de la Concorde; and the Forum des Images in Les Halles, which cancelled all screenings. The Petit Palais is not on the march route, but it is close to the Élysée district, where several gatherings were banned this weekend, and the museum opted for caution to protect visitors, staff and works of art.

Full report

The march route, approved by the Paris police prefecture, runs from Place de la Bastille to Place de la Nation, setting off in the early afternoon. In a statement on October 22, the City of Paris urged residents and businesses to exercise the utmost vigilance from noon on October 24: bring in bins, bicycles and terrace furniture, and clear away barriers, construction materials and flammable items from public spaces.

The city assigned more than 1,000 cleaning staff for the weekend and activated a crisis cell from midday on October 24 to coordinate city services with the police prefecture. The interior ministry deployed Sentinelle operation soldiers on static security duties to free up police and gendarmes for public-order work. A curfew in Paris has been extended until October 26.
