Sydney · Sports · Nov. 1, 2026 · The City of Sydney says its new Huntley Street Recreation Centre in Alexandria has opened, completing seven major sports facilities across the Green Square and city south area in the past seven years. Lord Mayor Clover Moore formally opened the centre on Saturday, October 31; the council says it has invested more than $230 million in the sports precinct.

A former warehouse turned community sports hub

The Huntley Street Recreation Centre converts a former industrial warehouse into a modern community sports hub, with four multipurpose indoor courts for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics and badminton, plus multipurpose rooms for residents, workers, schools and sporting groups. The council says the centre serves Green Square, one of Australia's fastest-growing urban renewal areas, now home to about 48,000 residents and projected to reach 65,000 by 2046.

Seven venues within 2 km of Green Square station

All seven venues in the precinct sit within 2 km of Green Square station, the council says, forming a single community sports network. Moore said the opening reflects more than 20 years of planning to ensure public infrastructure was established for Green Square's growing population. Compiled from City of Sydney announcements.
