Vancouver Canucks trade Aatu Räty to Toronto Maple Leafs

The Canucks announced Thursday they have traded 23-year-old Finnish forward Aatu Räty to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forwards Brandon Buhr and Jacob Quillan, one day after placing him on waivers.
Why it matters
Räty was once the key young asset Vancouver acquired in the January 2023 Bo Horvat trade. Moving him the same day he cleared waivers closes the book on that once-promising return and signals the roster overhaul under new head coach Manny Malhotra is accelerating.
Trade details
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday they have acquired forward Aatu Räty from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forwards Brandon Buhr and Jacob Quillan. Räty, 23, was placed on waivers October 14 and cleared October 15 before the deal. He has one goal in four games with Vancouver this season; in 118 career NHL games with the Canucks and Islanders he has 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists).
Reaction
Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson thanked Räty for his contributions, wished him well in Toronto, and said acquiring two young forwards gives the club more players to work with as it looks to improve overall depth. Räty was the Islanders' 2021 second-round pick (52nd overall), won the 2025 Calder Cup with the Abbotsford Canucks, and helped Finland capture gold at the 2026 IIHF World Championship (four goals, three assists in 10 games).
