Amtrak's 'Pause for Progress' begins today: nine-day rail outage south of Washington Union Station

Amtrak's critical 'Pause for Progress' infrastructure upgrade starts after close of service Friday, Oct. 16, and runs through the morning of Monday, Oct. 26, sharply cutting train service south of Washington Union Station, with buses substituting on affected routes.
Why it matters
The A-Interlocking inside the First Street Tunnel routes every Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express movement between Union Station and Virginia. Its switches and crossovers are beyond their service life, forcing a 10-mph speed restriction that bottlenecks the Northeast Corridor and Southeast. Amtrak says a nine-day concentrated outage is more efficient than phased work, and promises better safety, reliability and on-time performance once done.
What changes
From Friday evening through Oct. 26 morning, expect major service reductions and cancellations south of D.C. The Carolinian will run with a bus connection to and from Union Station; in Virginia, one daily round trip will run Norfolk–Alexandria and another Roanoke–Alexandria, with Alexandria as the effective northern terminus. Scheduled bus shuttles will link Alexandria and Union Station. Northeast Corridor services north of Washington are unaffected. Amtrak urges riders to check train status at amtrak.com and allow extra transfer time.
