Apple Launches First Foldable iPhone Duo Worldwide, Starting at $1,999

Apple's first foldable phone, iPhone Duo, goes on sale October 23 in more than 70 countries; some Chinese pre-orders already slipped to late January 2027.
Why it matters
This is Apple's first entry into the foldable smartphone market and the first flagship product under new CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, 2026 — the biggest form-factor change for the iPhone line in nearly a decade.
Full report
iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including the US, UK, China, Canada, India and Japan, after pre-orders opened on October 16. US pricing starts at $1,999 (256GB); China pricing starts at 15,999 yuan.
Hardware specs include a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display with a nano-texture coating to reduce crease glare, no Face ID in favor of a side-key fingerprint sensor, eSIM-only worldwide, and Apple's second-generation C2 modem alongside the A20 Pro chip.
Initial supply is tight. Digitimes reported on October 23 that delivery estimates for some Chinese pre-orders have slipped to late January 2027. China Mobile, Unicom and Telecom have all confirmed eSIM support for the device, removing the eSIM barrier in China; however, Apple Intelligence remains unavailable in China due to regulatory approval still pending.
Apple's arrival directly challenges incumbents — Huawei holds roughly 70% of China's foldable market. Launch performance will show whether Apple can repeat its slab-phone dominance in the foldable race.
