Brazil runoff confirmed: Flávio Bolsonaro takes 47% into Oct 25 showdown with Lula

Brazil's first-round final count: Flávio Bolsonaro 47.03% vs. Lula 45.16%, runoff set for October 25; both candidates gave their first post-result statements.
Why it matters
With nearly every ballot counted, Brazil's most polarized presidential race in decades is officially headed to a runoff on October 25. The result confirmed what late polls missed: Flávio Bolsonaro outperformed expectations, while 80-year-old incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva — seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term — finished about two points behind.
Both candidates have now framed the three-week sprint: Bolsonaro's camp is declaring the end of the Workers' Party era, while Lula is betting on his reputation as a comeback campaigner. Pollsters who projected a tighter or Lula-leaning first round are under scrutiny.

BRASILIA — Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) released near-final first-round results on Sunday: with 99.99% of votes counted, Flávio Bolsonaro took 47.03% (56,104,268 votes) against Lula's 45.16% (53,876,617). Turnout was 78.91% of 158,745,502 registered voters.
Speaking outside his home in Brasilia, the 45-year-old Bolsonaro — son of former president Jair Bolsonaro — said Brazil wants change and declared the era of Lula's Workers' Party over. He repeated a campaign pledge to end presidential re-election in Brazil, saying he only needs one term.
In São Paulo, Lula admitted the outcome was unexpected, saying he had been convinced he would win outright. He promised a new campaign beginning Monday and said he is confident in the runoff, joking that he performs well in the “knockout stage.”
The Bolsonaro family also posted gains in congressional races, and São Paulo governor Tarcísio de Freitas — a Bolsonaro ally — was re-elected. The runoff is set for October 25, with the winner's term beginning January 5, 2027.
