Calgary expands blue cart recycling starting Oct 1

Foam packaging, aerosols, flexible plastic wrappers and tubes join the accepted list as Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility framework standardizes recycling province-wide.
Why it matters
Starting October 1, Calgarians can put far more everyday packaging in their blue carts — part of a province-wide shift that puts producers on the hook for funding residential recycling.

Beginning October 1, 2026, Calgary's blue carts and community recycling depots will accept a wider range of packaging: foam packaging including takeout containers and egg cartons; food and body aerosols such as cooking spray, sunscreen and hairspray; flexible plastic bags and wrappers including chip bags and granola bar wrappers; and tubes such as toothpaste and deodorant.
The expansion is part of Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility framework, which shifts the cost and operation of residential recycling onto the producers of packaging and paper. The result is a standardized accepted-materials list across Alberta municipalities.
The city reminds residents that recyclables must be empty, clean and loose — rinsed or wiped, with no bagging. Phase one of EPR took effect April 1, 2025; Calgary says single-family households saw blue-cart fees fall by $7.17 a month as producers began funding more of the program.
