Calgary: Person killed on Deerfoot Trail while changing tire, police say

On the afternoon of October 20, a person changing a flat tire on the right shoulder of northbound Deerfoot Trail near 17th Ave SE was struck by a truck with a trailer exiting the highway and died at the scene. Calgary police are investigating.
Why it matters
Shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, a fatal crash occurred on northbound Deerfoot Trail near 17th Avenue S.E. in Calgary. The victim had stopped a truck on the right shoulder to change a flat tire and was outside the vehicle when struck by a truck with a trailer changing lanes to take the 17th Avenue exit. The person died at the scene.
Investigation underway
Calgary Police Service traffic Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward told CBC News the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating fully; no charges have been laid and the investigation continues.
Woodward warned that shoulders on busy highways like Deerfoot are narrow, leaving anyone changing a tire on the driver's side directly exposed beside traffic lanes; drivers forced to stop should move behind the guardrail if possible.
