Calgary councillor pitches penalties for stopping under overpasses in hailstorms

· N GLOBE

A Calgary councillor is proposing driver education and possible penalties for motorists who park under overpasses during hailstorms, blocking live traffic lanes.

Why it matters

Hailstorms are a summer fixture in Calgary, and many drivers pull over under overpasses to shield their cars from hail — blocking traffic lanes and creating rear-end collision risks. A city councillor now wants a mix of education and fines to stop the dangerous habit.

Full report

According to CTV News, a Calgary councillor is proposing an education campaign plus possible penalties for drivers who stop under overpasses during hailstorms. The Calgary Herald covered the pitch under the headline "'It is an issue," signalling council is taking the problem seriously.

Meteorologists have long warned against the practice: a Weather Network meteorologist once called sheltering under a bridge in a storm "spectacularly dangerous," because drivers behind have almost no visibility and can slam into vehicles stopped in live lanes. Calgary police condemned stopping in the middle of a highway during a storm back in 2020.

Police advise drivers caught in hail to exit the highway safely and park on a side street or in a parking lot — anywhere that does not block traffic — rather than stopping under an overpass.
