Calgary Stampeders kicker René Paredes will retire at the end of the 2026 CFL season; Saturday's home game against the B.C. Lions at McMahon Stadium (Oct. 17) will be his final regular-season appearance. The 41-year-old spent his entire 15-year career with Calgary, the club's longest-serving active player.

Why it matters

The Calgary Stampeders announced earlier this month that 41-year-old kicker René Paredes will retire at the end of the 2026 Canadian Football League season. Saturday's home game against the B.C. Lions (Oct. 17) at McMahon Stadium will be the veteran's final regular-season appearance.

Paredes signed with the Stampeders as a free agent in 2011 and never played for another club in his 15-year career, making him Calgary's longest-serving active player. He ranks second in franchise history in seasons played, games (253), points (2,535), field goals (649) and converts (547), with a career field-goal rate of 87.7% and 13 walk-off field goals — the most recent a career-long 62-yarder at McMahon Stadium on Sept. 19.

Honours

He is a two-time Grey Cup champion (2014, 2018), going a perfect 11-for-11 on field goals across five Grey Cup appearances; he was named the league's Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2013, earned six All-CFL selections and was voted a team captain 12 times. Born in Venezuela and raised in Montreal, Paredes said: "This wasn't easy, but I've made the decision that this season will be my last. Playing for the city of Calgary has been such an honour."
