The City of Calgary announced today that Rocky Ridge Athletic Park, beside the Shane Homes YMCA in Rocky Ridge, is officially open, adding two lit artificial-turf fields for Calgarians to practice, train and compete.

Why it matters

The City of Calgary newsroom announced today that Rocky Ridge Athletic Park is officially open, giving northwest residents new space to practice, play, train and compete. The park features two artificial-turf multi-use fields plus field lighting, washrooms, parking and spectator seating, bringing the city's athletic park network to 15 parks and 31 soccer fields.

Background

The park sits beside the Shane Homes YMCA in Rocky Ridge (Ward 1). The fields have been available for limited fall bookings since Sept. 24 (Thursdays 5–10 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.–5 p.m. through Oct. 29); the city says the park is now substantially complete. Construction created about 100 full-time-equivalent jobs and contributed roughly $11 million to local GDP.

A second phase — an indoor fieldhouse with a FIFA-standard field — is in design, with work expected to continue through 2028. The Calgary Herald also covered today's opening, calling the fields a long-awaited addition for the community.
