Why it matters
Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings for parts of Alberta on Oct 9, with Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer under special weather statements — the season's first significant snowfall in the province, arriving right on the Thanksgiving long weekend travel peak (Monday, Oct 12).
Details
Snowfall warnings cover Hinton, Grande Prairie, Jasper and Whitecourt, among others. Western foothill areas including Hinton, Grande Cache, Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House could see 10 to 25 centimetres. The city of Calgary is currently expected to receive only light accumulations, though heavier snow remains possible along the southern Alberta foothills.
Snow will begin late Friday and persist into Saturday, tapering off from north to south Saturday night, with southern Alberta seeing snow into Sunday. Environment Canada warns travel will likely be challenging with reduced visibility and possible localized utility outages — allow extra travel time and use caution on snow-covered roads.
