Nanos Poll: Nearly Half of Canadians Oppose Privatizing the Big Four Airports

· N GLOBE

A Nanos Research survey for CTV News finds 47% of Canadians oppose or somewhat oppose the federal plan to bring private investment into Toronto Pearson, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver airports.

Why it matters

Bringing private capital into Canada's four busiest airports is a centerpiece of Prime Minister Mark Carney's plan to unlock value from public assets. With nearly half the public skeptical, pushing ahead risks a political backlash — and could reshape airport fees and service standards.

Full report

The Nanos Research survey for CTV News found 47% of respondents oppose or somewhat oppose allowing private investors to operate Canada's four largest airports, versus 38% who support or somewhat support the idea and 15% who are unsure. The survey of 1,057 Canadians was conducted September 27 to 29, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.0 percentage points.

The four airports are Toronto Pearson, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver international airports. Carney introduced the proposal at the Canada Investment Summit in September, arguing private capital could fund infrastructure and improve services. Ottawa's airport is not among the four, but fees and service at the big hubs shape travel costs across the network.

Nanos founder Nik Nanos described public opinion as "very cautious" and "a mixed bag." Unions and competition experts have already warned privatization could mean higher costs, weaker accountability and lost public control.
