CTV News reported on September 29 that Conservative MP Scott Aitchison, who represents the Ontario riding of Parry Sound—Muskoka, is expected to resign his seat by the end of the year, citing a source close to him. After roughly 30 years in elected office, Aitchison plans to step back to “pursue other opportunities,” and a formal announcement is expected in the coming days.
Global News reported that Aitchison, currently in Newfoundland and Labrador, informed Poilievre of his decision a week ago and is expected to issue a statement as early as Wednesday or Thursday. CBC News, citing three sources, reported he plans to leave before the House of Commons rises for its Christmas break in December.
Aitchison was first elected in 2019 and previously served as mayor of Huntsville from 2014 to 2019. He ran for the Conservative leadership in 2022, losing to Poilievre, and went on to serve as the party's housing critic.
The other MPs to leave Poilievre's caucus over the past year: Chris d'Entremont, Michael Ma, Matt Jeneroux and Marilyn Gladu crossed the floor to the Liberals; Richard Martel accepted a Senate appointment; and Larry Brock and Cathay Wagantall stepped away from federal politics. Six House seats are currently vacant.
The latest Nanos Research poll puts the Liberals at 49.9 per cent support against 27.9 per cent for the Conservatives, with 61.5 per cent of Canadians preferring Mark Carney as prime minister over Poilievre at 19.6 per cent.
