Thanksgiving Weekend Brings Alberta's First Widespread Snowfall of the Season

· N GLOBE

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement Oct. 8: from today (Oct. 9) through Sunday, snow will sweep Alberta, with 20+ cm possible in the western mountains (Grande Cache, Hinton, Jasper). The Calgary–Edmonton corridor could also see accumulating snow, threatening holiday travel.

Why it matters

This is Alberta's first widespread accumulating snowfall of the season — and it lands right on the Thanksgiving long weekend (Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday, Oct. 12). The weather agency warns of slippery highways, reduced visibility, difficult mountain driving and possible local utility outages that could upend holiday travel plans.

Full report

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement on Thursday, Oct. 8: rain will change to snow across west-central Alberta today (Friday), with accumulating snow possible across much of the province on Saturday (Oct. 10), including Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. The snow will ease from north to south on Sunday (Oct. 11).

The heaviest snow is forecast for western Alberta, where Grande Cache, Hinton and Jasper National Park could see more than 20 centimetres. Areas between Edmonton and Calgary may get 2–5 cm. ECCC has issued snowfall warnings for Hinton, Grande Prairie, Jasper and Whitecourt: "Travel will likely be challenging. Visibility will likely be reduced at times. Local utility outages are possible."

Officials advise long-weekend travellers to allow extra travel time, check road conditions before departing, and take frequent breaks when clearing snow. Behind the system, temperatures across Alberta will fall below freezing, with wind chill values reaching the minus double digits on Sunday night.
