Anand wraps UNGA81 high-level week with C$83.8M in aid and new Iran sanctions
Canada's foreign minister closed out the 81st UN General Assembly high-level week in New York on Saturday, announcing C$83.8 million in humanitarian and governance assistance for Yemen, Haiti and the DR Congo, plus new sanctions on five Iranian individuals and five entities.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand concluded her participation in the 81st United Nations General Assembly high-level week in New York City on September 26. The aid package includes C$31.4 million in humanitarian assistance for Yemen; C$25.4 million for security, governance and community resilience in Haiti — combating corruption and organized crime, preventing youth recruitment by gangs, strengthening responses to gender-based violence and supporting local peacebuilding; and C$27 million in humanitarian assistance for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A further C$994,345 goes to strengthening democratic resilience and countering Russian malign influence.
On Iran, Anand announced on September 23 new sanctions on five individuals and five entities under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations for their role in the regime's brutal repression of its population, consistent with Canada's leadership of the UNGA resolution on human rights in Iran since 2003.
In a statement, Anand said Canada worked closely with partners at this year's General Assembly to strengthen international law, advance maritime and Arctic security, support Ukraine, promote a just and lasting peace in the Middle East and address global security challenges, remaining committed to effective international cooperation and a safer, more secure and more prosperous world for all.
