Canada Announces Over $430 Million for Apprenticeship Training Under Team Canada Strong

Ottawa will invest more than $430 million over five years in the Union Training and Innovation Program to expand skilled-trades training; applications are now open.
Why it matters
With the global economy shifting and trade relationships evolving, Ottawa is betting on the part it can control: people and skills. This five-year, $430-million-plus commitment is the largest trades-training investment under the Team Canada Strong initiative, aimed squarely at chronic shortages in construction and manufacturing.
Full report
On October 15, Secretary of State (Labour) John Zerucelli announced in Ottawa that organizations can now apply through the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) to expand training capacity and improve access to and quality of apprenticeship training.
Funding flows through two streams: UTIP Infrastructure Expansion, with expressions of interest due November 12 for projects that could launch in spring 2027; and UTIP Innovation, a call for proposals due December 17 for new approaches to recruit pre-apprentices, support apprentices toward certification, and help journeypersons upgrade their skills.
The government says giving the next generation of workers access to high-quality training and clear pathways into the skilled trades is key to building a stronger, more resilient economy.
