Canada's Ballard lands 4.8MW Siemens order to power Romania's first hydrogen train fleet

· N GLOBE

Ballard will supply 24 FCrail 200 kW fuel cell modules (4.8 MW) to Siemens Mobility for Romania's first hydrogen train fleet, entering service in spring 2029.

Why it matters

The order strengthens the commercial case for hydrogen rail in Europe and deepens the long-running partnership between Canada's leading fuel-cell maker and Siemens — a concrete export win for B.C.'s clean-tech sector.

Full report

Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) on October 6 announced an order for 24 of its FCrail™ 200 kW fuel cell modules from Siemens Mobility GmbH — totalling 4.8 MW — for use in hydrogen trains for Romania.

The modules will power Siemens Mobility's Mireo Plus H trains under a contract Romania's national railway reform agency ARF awarded earlier this year: 12 hydrogen multiple-units scheduled to enter service in spring 2029. Railway Gazette International reported the €229 million contract, signed on April 28, includes 15 years of full maintenance at a dedicated depot in Bucharest.

The Mireo Plus H uses hydrogen fuel cells plus onboard batteries for zero local-emission operation on non-electrified lines, with a 120 km/h maximum speed and 131 fixed seats per two-car unit.

Ballard, headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, is a global provider of PEM fuel cells for heavy-duty mobility including buses, trucks, trains and marine vessels. Financial figures for the order were not disclosed.
