Canada Updates Brazil Travel Advisory Ahead of Sunday Election, Adds US Security Alert

The US Embassy in Brasília issued a security alert on Oct. 1, saying routine consular services at the embassy and regional consulates would be suspended from Oct. 2 over security concerns, and telling US citizens not to visit diplomatic compounds in person.
Brazil holds general elections on Oct. 4, 2026, with a second round on Oct. 25 if required. Canada kept its “exercise a high degree of caution” rating for Brazil — it did not raise the nationwide risk level — but warned of possible political gatherings, demonstrations, heightened security and transport disruption before, during and after the elections.
Canada advises travellers to avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings, follow instructions from local authorities, monitor local media, and stay prepared for changing security conditions. Australia also updated its Brazil advisory on Oct. 2, telling its citizens to avoid the US embassy, US consulates and surrounding areas.
