Carney Makes Final Unity Pitch to 5,000 in Edmonton: 'Turnout Will Decide' Monday's Alberta Referendum

With 48 hours to go before Alberta's Monday referendum, Prime Minister Mark Carney closed his unity tour at Edmonton's Expo Centre on Friday night, warning separation is a 'dangerous bluff' and pitching his energy agenda to Albertans.
Why it matters
With 48 hours until Alberta's October 19 referendum, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered his final unity pitch Friday night (Oct. 16) to more than 5,000 supporters at the Edmonton Expo Centre, warning that pursuing separation now would come at 'the worst possible time' and amount to a 'dangerous bluff.'
What he said
“Open your eyes. There are some outside our borders working to break us, so they can own us. Never, never,” Carney said. He stressed that “turnout will decide this referendum, because polls don't vote — only people vote.” He pitched his energy agenda: the Pacific Link pipeline, designated a project of national interest on October 1, saying “Canada is building big again. Alberta is at the very heart of it,” and arguing it would reduce dependence on the United States. He acknowledged Alberta's long-standing energy grievances: “When something's not right, we fix it together.”
Friday's tour and the ballot
Earlier Friday in Red Deer, Carney shared the stage with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in a show of unity; Smith credited 18 months of improved relations and joked that the Alberta-raised Carney, an Edmonton Oilers fan, “can't be all bad.” Monday's ballot has 10 questions — five on immigration, four on constitutional changes, and one asking whether Alberta should stay in Canada or begin the legal process toward a future separation referendum. More than 450,000 Albertans have already voted in advance. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also held a separate unity rally in Calgary on Friday.
