Carney confirms Modi visit Dec 11–12; India says dates still under discussion

Carney told diners at an Indian restaurant in Calgary on Oct 15 that Modi will visit Toronto and Ottawa on Dec 11–12. India's High Commission in Ottawa confirmed the dates on X, but India's foreign ministry says they are "still under discussion."
Why it matters
This would be the first visit to Canada by an Indian prime minister since the two countries' diplomatic fallout over the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The visit focuses on trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties, with both sides aiming to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by year-end and double bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030.
How it was confirmed
On the evening of Oct 15, Carney chatted with members of the Indian community at Cinnamon Indian Cuisine and Bar in Calgary, saying he had "just spoke" to Modi and that Modi would visit Toronto and Ottawa on Dec 11–12, adding: "We'll see if we can broaden it out." Carney shared photos from the restaurant visit on X, praising the Indian Canadians he met.
On Oct 16, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa confirmed on X that Modi will visit Canada on Dec 11–12, saying the two leaders agreed to build on the positive momentum in ties and work towards concrete outcomes across key sectors.
A wrinkle in New Delhi's line
However, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Oct 16 that the visit dates are "presently under discussion" and will be announced at the appropriate time — striking a more cautious note than Carney and the High Commission. In their Oct 13 call, the two leaders had agreed to speed up CEPA negotiations.
Trade backdrop
Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is leading a six-day trade mission in India, aiming for a trade pact by year-end. Canada-India goods and services trade stood at USD30.4 billion in 2025. Earlier this year, Canada's Cameco signed a C$2.6 billion uranium supply deal with India, and Canada's Fairfax Financial agreed to buy a majority stake in India's IDBI Bank for about USD5.56 billion — India's biggest cross-border bank deal.
