Carney launches National Council on Artificial Intelligence to advise on AI for All strategy

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Friday, October 2, in Ottawa the launch of the Prime Minister's National Council on Artificial Intelligence, a 13-member body that will provide independent, practical advice on the evolution of the government's AI for All strategy.
The council will advise on accelerating AI adoption, fostering national AI champions, building sovereign AI infrastructure, making AI safer, protecting democracy, and ensuring Canadians prosper from the transformation. Members include AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio, Ajay Agrawal and Sanja Fidler, Cloudflare CEO Michelle Zatlyn, former central banker Louis Vachon, Senator Thomas Pitfield, and Patrick Pichette as an ex officio member.
The council is advisory only: responsible ministers and departments remain accountable for policy decisions and implementation, supported by a small team within the Privy Council Office.
"Prosperity and sovereignty in the age of AI belong to nations that can build, adopt, and govern AI on their own terms," Carney said. AI for All, launched in June, targets an additional $200 billion of economic growth and 250,000 new AI-related jobs over five years, and aims to raise AI adoption from just over 12 per cent to 60 per cent by 2034. Last month the government also created Digital Transformation Canada to modernize service delivery and use federal purchasing power to help Canadian digital and AI firms scale.
