Prime Minister Mark Carney said on 1 November he had a good conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on the future of Canada-U.S. trade, with negotiating teams set to work in the coming weeks toward a mutually beneficial deal; Trump later said the two sides had “the concept” of a very good deal and were very close, though no final terms have been announced.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday, 1 November, that he had a “good conversation” with U.S. President Donald Trump on the future of Canada-U.S. trade. Writing on social media, Carney said the discussion built on recent constructive talks about the outlines of a mutually beneficial trade deal that would create jobs, boost affordability for families, and fully respect Canada’s languages, culture and sovereignty, and that the two countries’ teams would work in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome.

Trump says the two sides have “the concept” of a deal

After landing in Iowa for a rally, Trump said both sides had “the concept of a very good deal” and were very close to having one, adding that it would be great for American farmers and for the country, and fine for Canada. He mentioned the Keystone XL pipeline and the prospect that U.S. farmers would pay no tariffs on Canadian products, while making clear that final details had not yet been established.

Talks broke down in August; no terms announced yet

The upbeat tone marks a shift from August, when Canada walked away from negotiations after rejecting U.S. demands that Carney said threatened Canadian sovereignty, French-language protections and the auto industry. Trump then imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, prompting Canadian retaliation. Carney said last week that talks had picked up because Washington was moving closer to Canada’s position, but as recently as 28 October he said the countries were not yet in a position to reach a deal before the U.S. midterm elections. No details of a potential agreement have been announced; the U.S. midterms are scheduled for 3 November.
