Citing four sources, Reuters reported Oct. 2 that Canadian PM Mark Carney plans a Turkey visit this month to meet President Erdogan — potentially the first dedicated bilateral visit by a Canadian leader; neither office has commented.

Why it matters

Reuters reported Oct. 2, citing four sources with knowledge of the visit, that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to visit Turkey this month to meet President Tayyip Erdogan. If it goes ahead, it would be the first dedicated bilateral visit to Turkey by a Canadian leader — a sign Carney is accelerating his push to reduce Canada's economic reliance on the United States.

Full report

One source said Carney and Erdogan could discuss the free-trade talks the two countries formally launched on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara in July, as well as potential energy and defense cooperation. Two other sources said Canadian and Turkish trade ministers agreed this week to accelerate the talks ahead of the leaders' meeting.

The visit would mark Carney's latest break with Canadian diplomatic convention: after the collapse of trade talks with the US in August, he has vowed to double Canada's non-US trade over the next decade and has rushed to build ties with countries including China and India, while focusing less on human rights than his predecessors.

Bilateral trade remains modest: Statistics Canada data shows Turkey accounted for less than 0.3% of Canada's total merchandise trade in 2025 — about C$4.34 billion, compared with C$1 trillion with the US. Canada mainly exports lentils, aircraft and electronics to Turkey, and imports medical devices, fishing vessels, aircraft engines and jewelry.

Reuters noted Turkey joined Canada's Defence Security and Resilience Bank in July as one of 10 founding member nations, and that Canada's 2024 removal of weapons-export controls on Turkey helped thaw ties. Carney's office and Erdogan's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment; no dates or agenda have been shared.
