Mark Carney will visit Ankara and Istanbul October 21-23, meeting President Erdoğan and business leaders; bilateral trade is up nearly 50% in five years.

Why it matters

This will be the first dedicated bilateral visit to Türkiye by a sitting Canadian Prime Minister, marking a major step in Ottawa's push to diversify trade away from the United States.

Full report

Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Ankara and Istanbul, Türkiye, from October 21 to 23, 2026, his office announced on Tuesday. In Ankara, Carney will meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to advance cooperation on energy and mining, climate, defence and security, and people-to-people ties. In Istanbul, he will meet Turkish business leaders and investors to promote Canada as a trade and investment partner.

Bilateral trade has grown by nearly 50 per cent over the past five years, according to the Prime Minister's Office. Carney will spotlight priority sectors including energy, aerospace, advanced technologies, and mining and critical minerals.

The trip follows a Reuters report on October 2, citing four sources, that Carney was planning a Türkiye visit. Carney and Erdoğan launched negotiations on a Canada-Türkiye free trade agreement at the NATO summit in July, and Türkiye has agreed to join Canada's Defence Security and Resilience Bank as one of its ten founding member nations.
