Carney's UN Day statement: multilateral cooperation is not an ideal, it is a necessity

· N GLOBE

Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement on United Nations Day, Oct 24, saying the post-war order is eroding, the climate emergency is intensifying, artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly and armed conflicts are destabilising entire regions — and that in a fragmented world, cooperation is not an ideal but a necessity. Canada, the UN's sixth-largest contributor, will defend freedom, human rights, sustainability and solidarity, he said.

Why it matters

UN Day marks the entry into force of the UN Charter, in whose shaping Canada played a part in 1945. Carney frames multilateral cooperation as a necessity for tackling cross-border challenges — climate, artificial intelligence and war — rather than an optional ideal, and restates Canada's funding role and position within the UN system.

Full report

The Prime Minister's Office released Carney's United Nations Day statement on Oct 24 in Ottawa. Carney said that more than 80 years ago, in the aftermath of the Second World War, nations came together to build a new foundation for peace and cooperation, and that Canada played a pivotal role in shaping the UN Charter in 1945, whose founding principles have never been more important.

Carney said the post-war order is eroding, and the logic that justified multilateral cooperation is more compelling than ever: the climate emergency is intensifying, artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, and armed conflicts are destabilising entire regions. In this fragmented world, no country, no matter how powerful, can manage these challenges alone.

Carney said the UN remains the only global platform bringing together 193 Member States to promote peace and security, uphold international law and protect human rights, and that the question is not whether multilateralism can survive, but how it must evolve to meet today's challenges.

Carney said Canada will defend the fundamental values of freedom, human rights, sustainability and solidarity; as the UN's sixth-largest contributor, Canada will work alongside fellow Member States to fulfil the organisation's mission and uphold the principles of its founding charter, and, as it builds strength at home, will work with partners abroad to defend human dignity, secure lasting peace and create greater prosperity. The statement announced no new policy or funding.
