45 2SLGBTQI+ groups rally on Parliament Hill, urging Ottawa to renew federal action plan

· N GLOBE

Egale Canada and more than 40 organizations are on Parliament Hill today for a national Queer Day of Action, calling on the federal government to renew and strengthen the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan with sustained investment.

Why it matters

Dozens of 2SLGBTQI+ organizations are lobbying federal decision-makers in person today — the largest coordinated Hill day of its kind. The groups say 2SLGBTQI+ communities face growing challenges at home and abroad, and Canada cannot afford to lose the progress, capacity and community infrastructure built through the federal action plan.

Full report

The Queer Day of Action on Oct. 6 brings a delegation of 45 organizations — spanning 2SLGBTQI+, international, feminist and labour groups — to Parliament Hill in Ottawa to meet federal decision-makers and press for a renewed and strengthened Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan backed by sustained federal investment.

The plan's community infrastructure includes organizations people turn to for support, advocacy and connection — including in communities with historically fewer dedicated resources — and networks supporting affirming services for 2SLGBTQI+ youth. "Canada cannot step back from its commitments to 2SLGBTQI+ communities at home and abroad," Egale Canada said in its Oct. 6 news release. Alex Arseneau of Alter Acadie NB said federal leadership helps ensure Franco-queer communities in New Brunswick have a voice in the broader equality work.
